The Essay

This year's topic is America's involvement in World War I. This topic is intentionally broad. Applicants are expected to select just one component of the United States' service in Europe. Examples may include amalgamation, a particular battle or campaign, or how America's presence on the battlefield so late in the war helped turn the tide for the Allied Forces.

  • Be sure to cite all outside sources. Applicants may use the academic writing standards (APA, MLA, CMS, etc.) of their chosen degree or field.
  • Essays should be a minimum of 1,500 words but no more than 2,500 words. Again, use the academic writing standards for your particular discipline.

Deadlines and Other Information

All scholarship applications must be received through our online application process (see below) no later than 11:59pm on February 15, 2018.

Transcripts may be mailed to the Pershing Foundation, uploaded as part of the scholarship application form, or emailed directly to the scholarship committee at scholarships@pershingfoundation.org. Unofficial transcripts, such as those downloaded from an online registration system are acceptable so long as they show the course name, credit hours, class GPA and cumulative GPA.  Official transcripts certified by the school registrar are not necessary.

Letters of recommendation may be from an employer, cadre member, professor or academic advisor. We encourage applicants to seek a letter of recommendation from their Pershing Rifles or Pershing Angels advisor. Emphasis should be on the applicant's demonstrated and potential leadership abilities.

Physical Fitness test scores are only required for undergraduate applications. The Foundation does not consider an applicant's R.O.T.C. standing when scoring their application. However since physical fitness is important in military service and the Pershing family of organizations focuses on building military leaders, this requirement cannot be waived for non-cadet applicants. Applicants should submit a physical fitness test score specific with their branch of service. Non-cadets may choose which test to complete.

Scholarship funds may be used for scholastic purposes only. This includes tuition, fees, books, lab supplies, room and board, and technology requirements. The Foundation reserves the right to ask the applicant to prove scholarships funds were spent for academic purposes. Scholarship funds spent for non-academic purposes must be repaid to the Foundation.

When in doubt, please ask. Applicants who have questions or concerns about the Foundation's scholarship program should contact us for clarification.
